History of Breweries
AKTIENBRAUEREI - KAUFBEUREN - GERMANYAKTIENBRAUEREI - KAUFBEUREN - GERMANYAKTIEN HISTORY The Aktien brewery located in the town of Kaufbeuren in Bavaria is able to trace its brewing heritage back to the year 1308 AD. By 1312 AD there was already a number of breweries in the then 112-year old imperial town of Kaufbeuren. The first brewers' guild came into being around 1325 AD. The years 1308, 1312 and 1325 show that the present Aktien Brewery, which developed from the oldest Kaufbeuren breweries, can boost one of the longest traditions in the German brewing industry. It is, of course, no secret that Germany's oldest breweries are located in Bavaria. It was not until 200 years later, in the year 1516, that the famous Bavarian Purity Law was decreed by Duke Heinrich IV of Bavaria; henceforth beer had to be made exclusively from natural ingredients of water, malt, hops and yeast. Aktien uses exclusively only Hallertau hops and grain from the surrounding area. The yeast used has been cultivated as a proprietary product unique to Aktien. Although the Bavarian Purity law was defeated in Brussels in March 1987 (now and in the future, beer which is not keeping with the hitherto valid norm can also be sold in Germany) Aktien will continue to brew its beer strictly according to the Bavarian Purity Law for the sake of quality and taste. Aktien has been successful in making the transition from the middle ages to modern times while maintaining and, indeed insisting upon, the highest quality possible brewing standards. As an example, Aktien matures and bottles its products with the latest technology to assure their stability - yet the craftsmen still brew according to original recipes. It is for that reason that Aktien enjoys a loyal following of beer drinkers around the globe.
ALASKAN BREWING COMPANYALASKAN BREWING COMPANYSoon after gold was discovered in 1881, breweries in the new town of Juneau began quenching the thirst of hardy Alaskan miners. By 1903 at least four breweries had begun operation in the twin cities of Juneau and Douglas. Between 1899 and 1907, local residents enjoyed a particularly fine brew created by the Douglas City Brewing Company. Almost 100 years later, Alaskan Amber Beer, based on that same historic recipe, has started a small gold rush of its own. In 1986, the Alaskan Brewing Company became the 67th operating brewery in the United States and the only one in Alaska. Since that time our products have brought home more than 33 major medals and awards, including "Best Beer in the Nation" in the 1988 Great American Beer Festival Consumer Preference Poll. The popularity of our beers has led to heroic efforts to keep up with the demand. We claim the unofficial record for production on a 10 barrel brewing system, with a whopping 42 batches in a single week. The addition of a new, 100-barrel brewhouse in 1995, and a Sankey-type keg system installed the following year, finally made it possible for us to serve the entire Pacific Northwest and later the Desert Southwest. Brewing beer in Alaska isn't easy. In the coastal community of Juneau, without road connections to the lower 48 states, everything arrives and leaves by water or air, and the weather always has the last word.

SWEET WATER BREWERYSWEET WATER BREWERYSweetwater is a 40,000-barrel microbrewery (located at 195 Ottley Drive in Atlanta, GA 30324) that specializes in producing aggressive West Coast style beers to be enjoyed in the Southeast US. Having had great success, (2002 Small Brewery of the Year at the GABF!) Sweetwater's taste has grown throughout Georgia and beyond by word of mouth. The market of beer lover's has fallen for this Georgia brew, which has begun spreading throughout the city of Atlanta and its neighboring states. It's a local brew for local folks and we'd like to thank each and every one of you for enjoying the good beer as much as we do! Partners Fredrick Bensch and Kevin McNerney went to school together in Boulder, Colorado. During those four years, they realized they had more of a hankering for beer than books, so they jumped into brewing, actually jumped into washing kegs on the loading docks of breweries for free beer.
Both Fredrick and Kevin worked for 7 different breweries in Northern California and Colorado, working on their title of "beer connoisseurs" and enhancing their business sense, they're still working on the latter. With the support of exceptional families and friends, Fredrick and Kevin were able to bring West Coast Style Beers to the beer desert known as the Southeast. On February 17, 1997, Sweetwater enjoyed their first brew.
Wachusett Brewing CompanyWachusett Brewing CompanyWachusett Brewery founders Ned, Kevin and Peter developed a significant appreciation for beer while attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Adventures in biking, canoeing, and hiking that led the trio to the northern New England states allowed them to visit some of the first operating craft breweries. Armed with a “we can do this” attitude the three cast off from their careers in engineering and biology to found the Wachusett Brewing Co. in 1993. Wachusett Country Ale was introduced to beer fans of Massachusetts the next year after lots of experimenting to get the formula just right. When Wachusett opened, the three designed and built most of the equipment; did the brewing and filling, selling and delivering, and everything else that a small startup brewery needed. Ned, Kevin and Peter are now backed by some of the most passionate and capable co-workers in the industry. Wachusett Ales continue to be hand crafted with the finest ingredients available, bottled and kegged in our Westminster facility. The three have never strayed from their plan to brew and sell the freshest, highest quality beers possible.
